Today our discussion is on a type of capacitor called as electrolytic capacitor. Electrolytic capacitors are defined as polarized capacitors which has anode electrode composed of an insulating oxide layer acting as dielectric of electrolytic capacitor. Electrolytic capacitor principle was discovered in 1886 by Charles Pollak. Electrolyte in capacitor is defined as gel or liquid which has high concentration of ions present in it. Mostly, all electrolytic capacitors are polarized because the voltage present on positive terminal is always or must be greater than the voltage on the negative terminal.

Electrolytic fabrication is of tantalum or aluminium. Double layer electrolytic capacitors are also present that has large capacitances of hundreds and thousands farads. Aluminium electrolytic capacitor is frequently used in the electronic circuits ranging from 1microfarad to 47mF with operating voltage of up to a few hundred volts dc. Aluminium electrolytic capacitors can be seen in domestic appliances, computer motherboards and power supplies. Due to its polarized nature it's used in DC circuits mostly.

In embedded systems, these capacitors are mostly used contributing in running hardware circuitry. They range from 10mf to maximum level. These avoid overheating and reduce losses in low equivalent series resistance.
